train spotting

Here's some numbers:

Bailey Yard, North Platte, Nebraska

8 miles long

3.5 miles wide

maximum number of tracks you'd have to cross at widest point -- 301

3000 workers

The Golden Spike Tower is eight stories high with an enclosed observation deck on top and an open deck on the seventh floor, where the wind threatens to blow you off at any time.

We could have sat there all day. We had about two hours of questions for Charles, the retired railroader who volunteers there regularly. It really was that much fun to watch.

Videos would be especially appropriate here, but I'll have to post pictures instead.

After the Bailey Yard, it was a very long and very flat drive to Dodge City, Kansas where we are spending the night before going to Boot Hill and more in the morning.
